LOUISE NEVELSON

Cinisello Balsamo (Milan): Silvana Editoriale, 2025

Dedicated to the Ukrainian artist Louise Nevelson, a naturalized U.S. citizen (born Lija Isaakivna Berljavs’ka, Kyiv, 1899 – New York, 1988), this volume traces the life and work of a woman who played a fundamental role in the international art of the twentieth century, and also aims to pay tribute to a radical figure and her struggle for self-assertion and the independence of women in art and society. The large-scale black, white, and gold monochrome sculptures she created by assembling pieces of discarded wood triggered a process of transformation akin to that of alchemy in which lead becomes gold, foreshadowing issues that are still relevant today, such as memory and the condition of women in society.
